Brunel's Pumping Station is saved

12th March 2008

South Hams District Council is delighted to announce that on Friday 7th March English Heritage granted the Brunel designed Pumping Station and boiler house on the Dairy Crest site in Totnes 'Grade II' listed status.

Site owner Dairy Crest has been informed of English Heritage's decision, which will prevent the demolition of the buildings.

Richard Gage, Conservation & Design Officer, South Hams District Council was particularly keen to see Brunel's buildings retained and worked hard to lobby English Heritage to persuade them to grant listed status.

Mr Gage said: "This is really fantastic news. The listing offers these important structures a level of protection which should ensure their long term future.

"The town of Totnes and the South Hams as a whole will benefit from the retention of these important reminders of mid 19th century pioneering and innovative technological development.

"The decision to list the buildings reflects what 'people power' can do and how enthusiasm and passion for our historic built environment can really influence the decision making process."
