The Eastbury Hotel uses kitchen steam to go green

1st April 2008

The energy systems in The Eastbury Hotel in Sherborne have recently undergone a green makeover, meaning that the Hotel will reduce its yearly carbon emissions by over 3 ½ tonnes.

One of Dorset's most prestigious hotels, The Eastbury is based in a beautiful Georgian town house and with 23 bedrooms and a gourmet restaurant; owners Nicky and Paul King have been looking at ways in which they can be more environmentally conscious.

Their resulting green makeover uses heat pump technology that reduces energy usage in two ways. On a mid-summer’s day, the kitchens at The Eastbury can reach temperatures of up to 38°c, meaning that Nicky and Paul had to seriously think about installing air-conditioning which would add further to the Hotel’s carbon footprint.

“The temperatures in the kitchen meant we had to consider the need for air-conditioning, but the staff at The Energy Saving Company in Burnham showed us that all this hot air could be extracted and put to good use,”’ said Nicky King.

The heat pump system extracts the hot air, reducing the heat in the kitchen, this hot air is then channelled to the hotel’s boiler to heat the water used in the rest of the Hotel, eliminating the need for air–conditioning, and vastly reducing the energy used by the boiler.

Other smaller changes were also made including the installation of reflective panels behind all of the Hotel’s radiators, meaning that instead of losing heat through the wall, it is reflected back into the room. Nicky added: “Small changes like this can make real reductions in heating bills and subsequently our environmental impact.”

The actions taken to save energy at The Eastbury, including the installation of the heat pump system, will combine to save at least £4,000 on energy bills in the first year alone. Nicky finished; “In this case, we’ve discovered that, if you can’t stand the heat, extract it from the kitchen!”
