Self-builders are leading the way to more energy efficient homes, according to VELUX, which has reported a significant increase in the number of self builders incorporating energy saving technologies, such as solar thermal into their new homes.
Self build typically make up 10% of the new homes market, yet it is this group of house builders that is taking the boldest steps towards carbon neutral housing.
Kevin Brennan, Head of Sustainability for VELUX Company Ltd, comments:
“As the building industry comes under increasing Government pressure to improve its carbon footprint, it is the self builders which have emerged as the innovators within the market. Almost without exception, everyone in this group now incorporate a range of eco techniques and technologies such as solar energy, wall and roof insulation and rainwater harvesting, throughout the building process.
“Self builders have greater flexibility when looking to include renewable initiatives within the design of their home. While installing such innovations is likely to result in additional upfront costs, the motivation that they will personally benefit from the improved energy efficiency of the home through reduced fuel bills and associated running costs in the longer term, is often an influential factor.
“However, large builders should follow the example being set by self builders and aim for level three of the Code for Sustainable Homes, which can be achieved by introducing a number of small steps rather than piloting the development, which achieves level six, for publicity reasons.”
