Frequented by Winston Churchill, Orson Welles, Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh, The Mirabelle kept a table reserved for royalty
Bonhams will auction the cellar of the world-famous, Michelin-starred restaurant, The Mirabelle, following its sale in November 2007. The sale will be held on April 30th at Bonhams London headquarters and saleroom, 101 New Bond St.
The Mirabelle, a famed Mayfair institution was founded not far from its present location shortly before World War II and in its heyday, was frequented by luminaries such as Winston Churchill, Orson Welles, Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. Indeed, one table was always reserved for passing royalty.
Throughout its history, the Mirabelle has been noted for its classic French dishes and accompanying fine wines. These were divided into two lists: a day-to-day cellar and a fine wine list that featured first growths and rare champagnes. From these lists, Bonhams are selling a total of over 300 lots of wine.
Worthy of particular mention from this notable cellar are various vintages of premium champagnes such as Krug Collection, Dom Pérignon Oenothèque, Veuve Cliquot ‘La Grande Dame’ and Bollinger RD; a range of Burgundies from the Domaine de la Romanée Conti, Georges Mugneret, Domaine Ramonet, Jean-Michel Gaunoux and Bernard Morey; as well as coveted Rhone reds such as Château Rayas and Chave Hermitage from the glorious 1983 vintage.
No great cellar would be complete without some venerable old bottles of First Growths and here they go back to Latour 1916, featuring a further 8 vintages from this Château, as well as such classics as Haut Brion 1928 and Cheval Blanc 1953. More contemporary tastes are reflected in a rich variety of Californian and Australian classics such as a range of Penfolds Grange dating back to 1976 and top Napa Valley wines back to 1985. There are also a number of interesting wines at lower prices, many made up into mixed lots. These represent everyday drinking bargains that give every type of wine enthusiast the opportunity to enjoy wines from a historic cellar.
