MARTOCK FIRE STATION RETAINED FIREFIGHTER VACANCIES

Gail Bennett
16th June 2008

Being a firefighter in Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service is challenging and can involve a number of situations not commonly found in other jobs.

Martock Fire Station currently has a number of vacancies. We are looking to recruit members of our community to become retained firefighters and welcome interest from all sections of the community.

Firefighters are normal people who live or work in the community. Martock firefighters are professional people - firefighters, trades people, education assistants, managers, self employed business owners, locally employed; - in fact they come from each and every walk of life. The only thing that they have in common is that they have all decided to put something back into the community by becoming trained as firefighters. Fire doesn't discriminate and neither do we. We are keen to talk all members of the community.

Group Manager Paul Cregan said: "We know that there are many women that are capable of becoming firefighters and we believe they are reluctant to put themselves forward. Most people believe that the physical strength required to be a firefighter is much greater than it actually is."

Emergency response, training, community safety education, fire safety awareness health & safety and risk assessment all form part of the firefighters role.

Mr Cregan added: "If you are a local employer who may be able to release employees to undertake firefighting duties, please call to find out the benefits of employing a Retained firefighter and what they can bring to your business."

Whether you live, or only work in or near Martock, as long as you can reach the fire station within seven minutes of being alerted - your application will be considered.

Anyone who is interested should telephone 01392 872346 and ask for an application pack, alternatively email pbolster@dsfire.gov.uk
