Inspired by the plight of many African women in Uganda, sisters Alice Garrett and Helen Bryden have decided to organise a charity walk with a difference to raise money for maternity and paediatric care at Kumi Hospital, Uganda.
'Journey For Life' will involve a walk (along with 10 other women, men and children) from their village Dixton, dressed in African clothing, carrying their babies in slings, to the Cheltenham maternity hospital where they gave birth. The journey is 8 miles - not a lot compared to the 3 day walk some African women have to make in order to get maternity care.
All the money raised will go to help maternity and paediatric healthcare in Uganda. Alice Garrett, said " We are really looking forward to Saturday when we hope to help fellow mothers on the other side of the world who aren't as fortunate as we are when it comes to maternity care. It will be tough carrying my one year old daughter Sophie for the 8 miles, but it's nothing in comparison to what the average Ugandan woman encounters."
Alice went on to say " We are hoping that this can become an annual event so we would urge people to get involved or sponsor us."
