On 17 July, at 2:30pm, year 10 students from Frome Community College, Frome, Crispin School, Street and Ansford Community School, Castle Cary will take part in a Passing Out Parade at Wells Fire Station. The parade represents the graduation of the 7 teenagers from Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service's Firebreak scheme.
Firebreak runs one day a week for an entire school term and is aimed at students who don't quite find everything they need in the classroom. The students are issued with uniform, fire kit and report to Wells Fire Station every Thursday at 9:00am. As with real firefighters, only the highest standards are acceptable. Although set in a fire service environment, the course provides a varied range of activities designed to promote and improve confidence, teamwork, citizenship and self-esteem.
Throughout this term the Firebreak trainees have learnt to use pumps, hose and ladders; but most importantly they have worked together to get each other through this challenging course.
The trainees will be inspected by Area Manager Gary Ferrand and Mayor of Wells, Councillor Mrs Christina Borastero, demonstrate some of the skills that they have learnt and be presented with certificates in front of local dignitaries, family and friends.
